Whenever I visit a client of ours at Ann Siang Hill, I will make it a point to walk through Chinatown. Each time, I will walk past this tribute to the Samsui Women, a group of Chinese female immigrants who came to Malaya and Singapore between the 1920s and 1940s in search of construction and industrial jobs.

On one such occasion, I was inspired to write the following poem.

Seeing her each time I pause to honour All the tears, sweat and effort That contributed to what we have today

To remember that There are many still Who toil, sweat and shed tears Amongst us

May they be well May we be kind May we treat each other As human beings

We can reflect on the past yet it is in the present where we can make a difference. When we think about flourishing, one of the things for us to consider is how might we enable others to flourish as well. As individuals, it can be simple gestures such as thank you recognition, good morning greetings or simply being extra patient. As companies, we can ensure that our policies are beneficial and non exploitative; that we recognize all employees as persons and not as numbers.

We are always stronger together.
